IBC 2012 Tools and Tips

IBC Exhibits open on the 6th of September, opening at 10:30 AM on that day and at 9AM for the rest of the exhibit days. The last day is the 11th, with a closing at 4PM.

Conferences begin a day earlier and finish on the 1th as well.

The IBC is offering an iPhone/iPad and Android App again this year. In just the first few minutes with it, it seems better than last years, although it doesn’t have some of the same problems. There doesn’t seem to be an interface with the iPhone/iPad/Android calendar system…though the yellow star that chooses favorites is a decent touch for both choosing and creating a list of events and exhibitors. Still…what I would give to have the info like the location pass through to my calendar.

iApp 2012

Since a discussion with friend Seth Krugliac of the post house and audio specialist 5 Guys Named Moe…geez, that’s a long sentence already. Anyway, he was developing an iApp…no, I mean, actually developing one, not like me and 50,000 other people who are just waiting for some version of hardware and software that will eventually do what we need to make the app-of-a-lifetime actually work. Yet again…not to the point…Anyway, Seth has finished that app before I got the iApp article written that I was hoping for.

Certainly, no one can write a iApp article without giving homage to Taz Goldstein’s Hand Held Hollywood website. It has a great collection of reviews, plus a directory that seems to include everything.

Know How Androids Crack

There was news about older versions of the iPhone OS being maliciously cracked. Now, news of the Android in a worse situation.

Protecting Users Against This Kind of Attack—This attack takes advantage of the poor way that Android GUI displays permissions requests and takes advantage of the fact that Google does not attempt to vet apps before they appear on the Android Market (and allows them to be distributed elsewhere as well.) The best way to mitigate against it is to educate users of the importance of examining and understanding all permissions requests that an app presents, and warning them that some permission requests may not be visible without scrolling down list, before deciding whether to install the app or not. In particular, users should probably be advised not to install any application that asks for permission to change APN settings.
