Cinema Test Tools for the non-Technical Manager – Post Installation Quality Assurance Has Begun

Cinema Test Tools is a free resource for the cinema industry, tuned most particularly for the non-technical manager. The tools include several DCPs, all with interesting means of testing the sound and picture quality for the interested by lightly trained staff. The lessons on sound and light are written to provide a foundation to communicate with the technician who must respond quickly and well to the information that they discover.

The key is a free Managers Walk Through Checklist that correlates with the many DCPs. It helps bring an understanding of the many nuances of the auditorium's situation in a straightforward way. 

Since we became our own secretaries, it seems that we have to know nearly everything these days.

Ohga-san Passes

Growing up in entertainment technology in the 70's meant growing up with relationships with Sony in many areas of the business. The myth of the company revolved around two people; co-Founder Akio Morita and Ohga-san, Mr. Norio Ohga. (The other founder, Mr. Masaru Ibuka didn't have as much of a public profile, for us gaijin at least.)

Your editor has had many incarnations of relationships with members of the Sony group, in Tokyo and Atsugi in Japan, in Los Angeles and New York and London. The spirit of the two pioneers most always seemed to have infused everyone with the desire for the highest quality in every aspect of the many games they played.

Ohga-san has passed. This article in the New York Times explains some of the attributes of the man: Norio Ohga, Who Led Sony Beyond Electronics, Dies at 81. May there be many more people like him.

PDF/A: Federal Court Requirement

The PDF file is ubiquitous. There are versions for all operating systems. It is also in constant flux.

It is in flux because Adobe makes revisions to add new features. It is also in flux because it is a constant security threat to computers of all varieties, to operating systems of all varieties. It regularly is a vector for trojans and other malware that allows black-hats to take control of the computers of the unwary. 

There is one variety that is not in flux. That is PDF/A, a version that is an ISO standard. (ISO 19005)

Eye better than camera capturing simultaneous contrast and faint detail

The human eye long ago solved a problem common to both digital and film cameras: how to get good contrast in an image while also capturing faint detail.

Nearly 50 years ago, physiologists described the retina's tricks for improving contrast and sharpening edges, but new experiments by University of California, Berkeley, neurobiologists show how the eye achieves this without sacrificing shadow detail.

Stuxnet Solved

Stuxnet Invasoin RoutineIn an updated version of its Stuxnet dossierPDF, Symantec writes that ten initial infections via five consecutive attacks were the starting points for the propagation of the Stuxnet worm. According to the paper, the creators of the worm targeted five specific companies in order to disseminate Stuxnet. Many indicators appear to point towards the conclusion that experts in the US and in Israel jointly developed Stuxnet over a two-year period.

The attacked companies were apparently service providers or other contractors connected with the Natanz uranium enrichment facility. While Symantec didn't provide any further details such as the names or nationalities of the attacked companies, all of the targets reportedly maintain a presence in Iran.

Understand IPv6 Addresses

Last week we dug into the whys and wherefores of using IPv6. Today we're going to learn all about how to understand IPv6 addressing by breaking it down into nice understandable chunks, and we'll cover some shortcuts for writing IPv6 addresses. You'll be able to look at an IPv6 address and understand exactly what it does. In the olden days, it was possible to skate over understanding the binary math behind IPv4 addresses by memorizing the various classes and their address ranges. That won't work for IPv6. Get yourself an IP address calculator and learn how work out the conversions and calculations, or IPv6 will forever remain a mystery. ipv6calc is an excellent one that runs on Linux/Unix. A bit of Googling will uncover an abundance of Web-based IP calculators and converters.
