Cinema Test Tools for the non-Technical Manager – Post Installation Quality Assurance Has Begun

Cinema Test Tools is a free resource for the cinema industry, tuned most particularly for the non-technical manager. The tools include several DCPs, all with interesting means of testing the sound and picture quality for the interested by lightly trained staff. The lessons on sound and light are written to provide a foundation to communicate with the technician who must respond quickly and well to the information that they discover.

The key is a free Managers Online Walk Through Checklist that correlates with the many DCPs. It helps bring an understanding of the many nuances of the auditorium's situation in a straightforward way.

AEG pays 1.3 million to Los Angeles

Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and the estate of Michael Jackson have agreed to provide $1.3 million to the city of Los Angeles to help cover the cost of last year's memorial for the entertainer at Staples Center, Councilwoman Jan Perry said today.

So says a breaking story release in the LA Times.

Interesting timing, as there were hundreds of police protecting the area around AEG's Staple Center after the LAkers took the NBA title just two days ago. The estimate of the costs to the city for the Jackson event was 3.2 million dollars. 

AEG later was paid 60 million for the clips that eventually were turned into the movie This Is It, also staged at the Staples Center. The movie was premiered at the LA Live Nokia Theater, also owned by AEG. 

A million is better than nothing, and the city has probably spent a lot of that in documenting paperwork and lawyer fees. But one supposes that they would never hold a grudge and further corporate events will get full support of the city.

Under the agreement, the city's general fund - which pays for basic services such as public safety and parks - would receive $1 million. Another $300,000 would be provided in the form of a contribution to the Los Angeles Police Foundation to pay for equipment at the Los Angeles Police Department, she said.

The memorial was staged at the Nokia Theater at Staples Center, both of which are owned by AEG. The cost of the event was viewed as controversial at a time when the city is scaling back services and laying off city employees. A city report last year put the total cost of the event at $3.2 million.

All Warner Bros Tentpole Movies Will Be Released in 3D

exhibition logoWarner Bros will be releasing five movies in 3D in 2010 and nine movies in 2011. Alan Horn announced at ShoWest that all the studios tentpole movies, superhero films, and big special effects releases, will be distributed in 3D. He called it the new standard for the company. And yes, he was clear that this includes all of the future DC Comic Books films. That means that the new Superman and third Batman will be released in 3D.

Fonda, Keener join 'Peace' pic

Jane Fonda and Catherine Keener are teaming up for a little "Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding," a multigenerational indie film to be directed by Bruce Beresford.

BCDF Pictures is producing and financing the picture, which is eyeing a July start in New York's Hudson River Valley.

Christina Mengert and Joseph Muszynski wrote the script, which centers on a conservative lawyer (Keener) who, after her husband leaves her, takes her son and daughter to the house of their estranged, hippie grandmother (Fonda) in Woodstock, where they each find love in unexpected places.

NCM Adds Metropolitan Theatres

How does one compete against giants? The giants can command better deals and pricing from their distributors and vendors, the giants can sneer at the concept of anti-trust. But the giants need huge funding, and huge funding brings delays. The mythic DCIP/multi-studio distribution network seems to be caught in that trap, but their other plans keep rolling along.

In this case, Metropolitan Theatres linked into the cinema advertising and NCM Fathom entertainment events network of National CineMedia, a joint project by giants AMC, Cinemark, and Regal. This adds 77 more screens to the DCIP-Borg Collective, reaching into California, Colorado, Idaho and Utah. Audiences get more advertising...perhaps slicker, as some are now titled NCM's FirstLook digital pre-feature program and NCM Fathom’s live and pre-recorded in-theater events beginning in the second quarter of 2010.

Mapping Movie Re-Issues

250 Top Movies MapEase of Distribution is one of the highlights of the digital cinema evolution. With news that Reliance will be converting 15-25 movies per year into 3D using the In-Three technology, and other news of the majors converting their libraries, what better way to decide what to look for than with a map...a subway-style map at that.

This brilliant piece of work was done using the imdb list as of June 2009, so it carries the prejudice of that userset and time, but the French blogger who put it together deserves great credit for the work.
